Meet Michael McDuff!
Michael was born on July 22, 2016. Upon his arrival into the world, doctors noticed some difference facial features with Michael but did not take any additional measures at that time. 5 days after coming home with a sweet baby boy, things changed for the McDuff family when Michael's heart started to fail and his lungs filled with fluid. Michael had a successful surgery once he was air lifted to Akron Main and transferred to Cleveland, however the doctor began to notice the same thing previous doctors had noticed before. A genetic test was ordered where the McDuff family learned that their son has a rare disease called 13Q Deletion with a dual diagnosis of Autism.
Liz (mom) and Mark (dad) were told that their sweet little boy would never live a normal life. But Michael has a fight within him that nobody can take away! This past December, after 3 weeks at Shirley Ryan Ability lab in Chicago, Michael was able to take a few steps on his own!
However, on May 31, Michael had his first seizure. He had his second a week to the day of the first. Both resulting in overnight stays for Michael and the McDuff family. For protection and companionship for sweet Michael, the McDuff's are hoping to get a service dog for their home. Michael is nonverbal and his seizures are silent. A service dog for him will help calm his anxiety, protect his unsteadiness when walking, and be an overall friend for Michael to love. And the ability for a service dog to potentially save his life during the middle of the night makes this an urgent need. A no brainer for the McDuffs to protect their sweet baby boy.
